TRETOLITE SNAP Fluids Separation Technologies for Conventional and Unconventional Operations
When separating water and oil, operators face many challenges, such as environmental compliance to meet in-spec oil and water regulations, unwanted slop oil generation, and lost oil production due to high oil-inwater (OIW) content. These issues can lead to an increase in operational costs and a decrease in operational efficiency.
To help overcome such challenges, Baker Hughes has developed TRETOLITE SNAP fluids separation technologies. This new generation of water clarifiers and demulsifers helps you reliably get high-quality water and in-spec oil while optimizing operations and reducing costs–without limiting production.
From the beginning, Baker Hughes partners with you to understand your production system and specific oil/water separation concerns and then to develop the right solution that will add value to your operations. We leverage over 100 years of knowledge and expertise in the fluids separation business to reliably trial and implement each technology program. The focus is to effectively and efficiently deliver the right solutions while managing associated risks and ensuring flawless execution.
TRETOLITE SNAP fluid separation technologies enable you to exceed current key performance indicators without compromising operational costs and efficiency.
Optimize OIW levels
These technologies help optimize OIW levels to lower operating costs and adhere to regulatory requirements to avoid potential penalties and fines. Removing oil from disposal water also helps minimize oil losses, which increases production revenue.
Optimize BS&W levels
By better controlling basic sediment and water (BS&W) levels, TRETOLITE SNAP technologies can help you meet or exceed in-spec oil regulations. Improving oil/water separation at lower operating costs improves the profitability of your overall operations.
Achieve a controlled interface
TRETOLITE SNAP demulsifcation and clarification technologies help achieve a controlled, tightened oil/water interface to process more clean water and dry oil. This allows you to reduce slop oil volumes and associated operational costs.
Applications

TRETOLITE SNAP Fluids Separation Technologies for SAGD Production
Steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) producers face many operational challenges while trying to get dry oil and clean water during fluid separation processing. These can include heat exchanger fouling and related downtime to clean equipment, production curtailment due to recycling requirements to meet spec, and excess slop oil generation and disposal. All of these issues lead to an increase in operational costs and a decrease in operational stability.
Reduce OIW level
These technologies help reduce oil-in-water (OIW) levels both at the free water knock out and de-oiled water outlets to improve water quality for reuse and reduce operational upsets. In addition, TRETOLITE SNAP water clarifiers have been proven to significantly reduce, and even eliminate, produced water cooler fouling, dramatically driving down your operational costs.
Lower BS&W levels
Many SAGD operations are forced to restrict production volumes to avoid operational upsets and shutdowns in surface systems. TRETOLITE SNAP technologies lower basic sediment and water (BS&W) levels to help reduce fouling and recycle volumes, so you can increase production throughput capacity.
Achieve a controlled interface
TRETOLITE SNAP demulsifcation and clarification technologies help achieve a controlled, tightened oil/water interface to process more clean water and oil. This allows you to reduce slop oil generation, delivering additional operational cost savings. It also significantly reduces the time required to recover from upset conditions, and in some cases, can free up capacity allowing for additional facility throughput.
Applications
- SAGD production facilities
- Features and benefits
- Reduce OIW levels:
– Improve water quality for water reuse;
– Reduce heat exchanger fouling and operational upsets.
– Reduce recycling requirements;
– Reduce diluent consumption;
– Lower inlet vessel operating temperatures;
– Increase throughput capacity.
- Provide a controlled water/oil interface:
– Process more clean water and oil;
– Decrease amount of slop oil gen;
– Increase process stability and decrease upset recovery times;
– Enable additional production throughput.
New TRETOLITE SNAP Water Clarifier Delivered USD 3.8 Million in Added Value
Location: Alberta, Canada
An operator in Northern Alberta was experiencing issues in a steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) field that was producing more than 50,000 bbl of bitumen per day.
The produced water coolers were continuously fouling due to poor water quality, which was increasing operational costs. Knowing it was critical to make a change to remain profitable in challenging market conditions, the operator reached out to Baker Hughes for an alternative solution.
The Baker Hughes team conducted significant research and development, including preliminary lab work and onsite bench testing, to develop the best solution for the operator’s specific conditions. Based on the evaluation, Baker Hughes recommended implementing a newly developed TRETOLITE™ SNAP water clarifier treatment program.
Initial bottle testing with the new clarifier showed drastic improvement in water quality—exceeding the incumbent product’s oil-in-water (OIW) performance at the free water knock out (FWKO) system by 58%.
The treatment resulted in excellent interface quality, tightening the rag layer to allow the operator to process more clean water and oil. The basic sediment and water (BS&W) rates were reduced to an average of 0.14% exceeding the incumbent product’s performance by 53%. The operator was also able to better manage de-oiled water quality as well as skim, slop, and off-spec recycling streams to further reduce operating costs. To date, data has shown no change in the ΔP across the produced water coolers, indicating that there is no fouling. The operator estimates USD 3.8 million in added value from this new TRETOLITE SNAP water clarification treatment and is currently implementing the same program in two other phases of their facility for additional cost savings.
This case history is presented for illustration purposes only, as results may vary between various applications.
Bottle testing results confirmed improved water quality and a better controlled interface with the TRETOLITE SNAP water clarifier. The TRETOLITE SNAP treatment bottle also displayed less oil coating on the glass, which translates to reduced produced water cooler fouling.
