Initial studies have already started, and if a final decision is taken to go ahead with the construction of the new cumene facility, Ineos aims to complete construction by 2020. A final investment decision will be taken before the end of 2018.
Ineos already has two phenol/acetone plants in Europe; in Antwerp, Belgium and in Gladbeck, Germany. The company is already the biggest producer of cumene in the world by capacity, and likewise of its derivatives phenol and acetone.
The proposed unit will be located in the Chemiepark in Marl, Germany, where several chemical production companies already have operations. The new company will have access to Ineos’ existing phenol and acetone production plant in Gladback. In addition, the company will benefit from pipeline connection to Evonik’s production site in Marl, and BP’s steam cracker in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
“The construction of a new cumene plant will support customer demand, improve the security of raw material supply to the INEOS phenol and acetone plants located in Gladbeck and Antwerp,” the company said.
