South Sudan Oil Output Cuts Likely As Rebels Up Kidnappings
South Sudan oil output, already more than 50% down since conflict in the region erupted three years ago, will likely plunge further as rebels kidnap more oil workers, piling more pressure on the restive nation. Rebels kidnapped four workers belonging to a Chinese and Malaysian consortium on Monday, the second kidnap in a month, threatening operations in Upper Nile state, which hosts the country’s remaining functional oil fields. Rebels have asked companies to leave the country, threatening South Sudan’s current 130,000 barrels-a-day of production.
